‘God Pan playing flute and two goats’ on Scythian sword handle from Tovsta Mogyla kurgan

0

In the triangle on the sword’s handle, there is a representation of the god Pan playing on his syringa (Pan flute or Pan pipes) with two goats near him. The sword was found together with the Golden Pectoral in the dromos of the male burial by Borys Mozolevsky in 1971. The swords were sacred for the Scythians and often prayed to. The details of the ritual are described in the “Royal Scytha, Greece, Kyiv Rus” book.
