With the start of Russia’s war on Ukraine, the country of Hungary increased the sounds of its claims about its “Great Hungary” lands in Europe. These claims rightfully angered Romania and Ukraine, as the BBC article describes the situation. Romanian football fans decided to show the true historic lands of the Hungarians and remind Orban and his supporters of the history of that nation. Is there any truth to it? Actually, there is. The story of Friar Julian is an excellent proof of that. The story also partly explains Hungary’s affinity with Russia and its not fitting well into the European Community. Just a month ago, European Commission decided to question “UEFA’s consenting to the Hungarian Football Federation using symbols liable to incite violence”.
