Scythian Queen from Tovsta Mogyla Kurgan: Gold Torque or Gryvna

1793

The gold hryvnia that was found on the neck of the Queen is one of the most artistically perfect works of goldsmithing. Its weight is 478.5 grams, and its transverse diameter is 17.5 cm.

The ends of the decoration on both sides look like a deer’s protomes, cast together with the rod. The deer’s protome is 1.7 cm high. The artist carefully conveyed all the muscles of the deer’s head.

Seven sculptural figures of lions are soldered behind each of the deer. None of the 14 lion figurines is a copy of the other, which means that they were cast in separate molds. They differ in size and the way the figure is posed. The length of the lion sculptures is from 1.9 to 2.1 cm, and the height at the head is from 0.8 to 1 cm.

Its only analog is the gryvna from a male burial at Chertomlyk Royal Barrow in the same area.

Borys Mozolevsky and other scholars were confident that the Chertomlyk torque’s terminals were sawn off for some reason – it is shorter than the one from Tovsta Mogyla by a couple of centimeters and has the signs of very extensive wear. In the scholar’s opinion, it is possible that the torque was not removed from the neck in decades during the lifetime. (B. Mozolevsky thought that putting it on or off would present the danger of breaking the torque at the bend).
